In compliance with the Regulation 883/2004, the CHIF shall cover the costs of the insured person’s planned treatment only if the authorization has been issued for the planned treatment based on a submitted application (Article 20 of the Regulation 883/2004). The treatment shall be authorized if foreseen by the Croatian compulsory health insurance system and if the same treatment cannot be provided within the territory of the Republic of Croatia within a time-limit that is medically justifiable, taking into account the insured person’s state of health and probable course of his or her illness.

The insured person is issued a special form for the treatment authorized in compliance with the Regulation, based on which health services in the EU are used and the costs of treatment are not settled personally, except the cost of personal participation (co-payment).
